ZOA official: "Duh!"
Dutch non-governmental organization ZOA apparently never expected the Tamil Tigers to suffer defeat at the hands of the Sri Lankan military. Such was their confidence in the Tigers that ZOA help run a quasi-hospital in a Tiger military base referred to as the ‘Stanley base’. To the incredulity of the ZOA ngots the Stanley base was demolished by the elite forces of the SL military who discovered enough equipment to run a hospital, all with – surprise, surprise – ZOA's name on it.
Needless to say, providing assistance to any entity without the knowledge of the government is a clear violation of international laws and undermines the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. And of course, the JHU – yes all in their orange robes sworn in to protect the non-violence message of the Buddha – was at hand to save the country. The monks were seen mobbing the ZOA office in Colombo and intimidating the staff. Again, no surprise there!
Obviously, the officials at ZOA quickly denied that any of its staff was involved in the operation of the hospital at the fallen Stanley base and speculated the equipment may have been stolen by the LTTE. Even if that was the case, shouldn’t ZOA have reported that to the government?
All this, when the INGOs in Sri Lanka have been demanding that they get diplomatic immunity. Why? So that they can carry out logistical operations for the LTTE? Hit and run pedestrians? Blow the cash raised for the Tsunami victims? This is hardly the time to give more rights to the ngots; rather, it’s time the NGO offices are audited, their dealings made transparent and the staff made accountable for their actions. This way, the true charitable organizations – those who are here to assist the local population – can focus on the good work they have been doing and not be the victim of bad publicity brought upon them by an irresponsible few.

This is the kind of attitude of Sri Lankans that destroys every good thing they have got. The NGOs are here to help and without them you will be nothing. As Sri Lankans you can't afford to complain about NGOs. YOu are after all a developing country and has no means to function by yourselves. Stop complaining and get your act together.
Bullshit. Do you thinkt he government should watch and wait when these stupid NGOs are helping the terrorists in the pretext of helping the country?
Fighting monks, terrorists helping NGOs, President with a red shawl, voiceless Tamils, disoriented opposition, criminal JVP, doctorates for thugs ... something's money can't buy. For everything else ...
I love Sri Lanka.
And now Save the Children has been accused of supplying boats to the sea tigers after the Janak camp was raided by the elite STF commandos.
Pictures of ZOA employees are available at JHU's Sinhala.net.
The reason for these NGOs' complicity with the LTTE is obvious.
In addition to having a disproportionate number of ethnic Tamil employees and left leaning foreigners who sympathise with the "cause", the LTTE coerces them to assist them as a condition for access to LTTE held areas.
For example, if an NGO wants to donate boats to tsunami struck fishermen, the LTTE would naturally ask them to give away a number of boats for their use.
If an NGO builds a hospital for civilians, the LTTE would of course make them treat their wounded soldiers.
If an NGO provides shelter and builds houses for refugees, the LTTE would make them build houses for Mahaveera families (families of suicide bombers) and LTTE camps.
LTTE would surely will not hesitate to use the food supplies meant for civilians for their starving cadres.
This is exactly why aid groups and other NGOs must be audited, monitored and even restricted. Their donors do not care if they support the LTTE or not as long as it helps do their required work. It's the Sri Lankan government and the people that suffer.
Its tempting to support the underdogs. But guys please pay attention to the LTTE history. They have after all eliminated all Tamil oppositions.
Apperently ZAO apperently built 40 houses for LTTE cadres.
In reply to the first comment,
We are a devoloping country, yes, true. Maybe we can not afford to complain. But, how dare you say, without NGO you are nothing ?. Name a one lake build by an NGO, Sri Lankans did not eat before NGO influence ? Maybe you let NGOs have anal sex with your mother or wife to earn your salary. Look man, Even this Island is so small, we proudly say, we are Sri Lankans. Do not believe that, thats the spirit what leads us to fight traitors like you.
There is no free lunch, eveybody needs a piece of the cake. And we refused to get laid and get paid. Just like most Sri Lankans work for NGO's Do. Ones like you.
name one lake made by modern sri lanka??
Sri lanka was a great country. but now it depends on the international community for money as well as man power. Sri Lanka is nothing without the NGO and foreign aid.
true, ever sins the brits left the country they handed it ower to their ass lickers, such as bandaranayake and senanayake families. who ruined this country.
Very true... Bandaranayake and his family (last link, Chandrika.. who sold Air Lanka) destroyed the whole country.. not to mention Senanayake family.. by the way what about that Gayboy Ranil ?
ZOA was officially vindicated by the SL military. It was clearly an incident where the local elements complicates the job of the NGOs and hopefully the politicians and the haters will think twice before jumping to conclusions. If the NGO wrap and leave, its the poor, unfortunately local people who suffer.
If the author of this article would be kind enough to explain WHAT THE NGOs HAVE TO GAIN FROM HELPING THE LTTE? What I can see is that they have a lot to loose but not gain by helping them. The Sri Lankan media and the Gvt are all out to find faults with the NGOs but that is typical sri lankan style isnt it? the Gvt without assisting and coorperating with the NGOs to assist the displaced and vulnerable communities, keep complaining that there isnt enough happening. I agree the certain INGOs are not as effcient as they should be but imagine this money in the hands of the Gvt!! I frankly see no reason why any NGO would want to help a terrorist organisation and ruin their international reputation, there is absolutely no logic but I beleive that the LTTE has registered several local NGOs after the tsunami. Since these organisations are registered NGOs and they work in the uncleared areas and since its difficult to distinguish between which is a LTTE NGO and which is not, there might have been instances where INGOs have given money to the wrong people. I frankly think the Gvt need to have better systems to help the people in the war torn areas. People who trvael to the North and East will see the number of NGOs helping these war victims casting aside all media and gvt criticism. Its not not easy to be in battle field, risking your life for others. I know it, because thats what I do. And thats what all my colleagues do. Its easy for some of us to stay in colombo and point our fingers...
Fuking NGO'S. It's time to leave Sri Lanka
you wouldnt know cos you probabaly have never been to the east or north and have seen the suffering. if you people who want NGOs to leave can leave their cosy and comfortable colombo lives and help work in war torn areas, then I dont see why the NGOs cant leave but until such time they will do all in their power to help these innocent victims of war. so get a life and learn to use suitable language
National security takes primacy over what good these NGOs do.
Anonymous asks what NGOs have to gain by supporting the LTTE.
A lot.
There are many Tamils and pro-LTTE Sinhalese working for these NGOs in addition to left-wing foreigners who sympathise with their cause. Is it so hard to believe that some of them may use their NGO privileges to help the tigers?
LTTE forces NGOs to help them as a condition for having access to LTTE held areas. Is it so hard to believe that LTTE will ask them for help and the NGOs will deliver if they don't have any other option?
Do you think that the international aid workers who are heading these missions in sri lanka would take the risks of damaging their international reputaion by being labelled as a terrorist funding NGO? For what!! You people are nuts!!
It just so happens that I have just visited the Moju website and seen this Just Mal comment and I thought what a racist but now he is against NGOs too!
I don't understand this attitude towards NGOs working in uncleared areas. After all, the government funds almost all public services in LTTE-controlled areas. Do you really think none of that money goes to the LTTE? By comparison, NGOs are a relatively small player. And what about Sri Lankan businesses, like Dialog, in Jaffna - don't they pay LTTE taxes? Why don't the monks invade Dialog offices? If you want to be consistent you should cut off all funding to LTTE controlled areas. But even if you are strongly opposed to the LTTE, do you really want to close down all the hospitals in the north? They're bound to treat some LTTE cadres, but without them you are condemning people who live there to no medical services. So its actually a bit complex - much easier of course just to rant about some NGOs.
