LTTE falls back to old ways
There has been much debate about the status of the LTTE forces in the battlefield. The Sri Lankan government and most analysts have agreed that the LTTE is on the backfoot and has lost ground conceding areas that were in LTTE control to the charging SL military. But historically, LTTE has always sprung back from verge of defeat, sometimes with some help from corrupt government officials in office no lower than the executive branch it self. Many conspiracy theories have emerged as to how the LTTE leadership was let off the hook several times in the past. But the current campaign led by Mahinda seems uninterested in offers to let up leaving the rebel group that is being merciless attacked by the SL military and the Karuna forces precariously close to a spectacular collapse.
Some, including the TamilNet (a pro-LTTE news website that has never admitted LTTE kills innocent civilians or conscripts children), have argued that the recent retreats and the inability of the LTTE to hold key LTTE position isn't a sign weakness but a strategy. If anyone believed that, the events this week should convince them otherwise.
The LTTE leadership has invested heavily in transforming the rebel organization from one that resorts to guerilla tactics to a seemingly professional military. This, they view as imperative, in the struggle for an independent state. Issuing of Eelam identification cards and the "legislation" of laws against the conscription of minors and such being the other spectacles LTTE occasionally carry out to further the perception of a separate state. But the suicide bombings in the recent days that specifically targeted civilians is a 180 from the culture the LTTE would like to promote. The bombings is a return to the 80s when the LTTE was merely a guerilla organization only able to destabilize the security situation of the country by utilizing suicide bombers.
The health of the LTTE is debatable; but the return to suicide bombing when the number of losses in the battlefield is adding up is a clear indication, LTTE has suffered a significant set back and the dream of an independent nation is as distant as ever.

Shows what the LTTE is made up of. Shame they turn to civilians when they are defeated. What sore losers!!
Nice article. But I wouldn't celebrate just yet. It is not easy to defeat the LTTE. They are trained and will go all out to defend certain teritories.
Cows!!
Kill the big bug and the rest will be nasty history.
True, there was a time when biting off the head would not have killed the thing, but those days are long gone. Today's LTTE represents none other than a few individuals who are well placed to benefit for the rest of their otherwise miserable lives. Liquidate these guys and the majority of the LTTE cadre is more likely to return to civil life voluntarily.
