A true son of the nation – President’s son is not
In a nation plagued with political corruption and unjust social system where the burden of defending the country has fallen primarily only on the poor, a glimmer of hope was raised when the son of the President Mahinda Rajapakse announced that he has enlisted in the Navy in order to serve the country. This was viewed as many to be ground breaking as it has become the accepted norm that the kids of politicians and the rich should not have to bear any burden of safe guarding the national integrity or for that matter perform any patriotic duty. Instead, it is normal for such individuals to, in fact, be a burden on the society and the tax payer by living a lavish life style enjoying amenities such as expensive cars, drivers and even bodyguards who protect them from situations the kids themselves are responsible for.
But the euphoria over the President’s son joining the Navy was, unfortunately, short lived. It was announced last week that the President’s son was the “lucky” beneficiary of a scholarship to the Dartmouth Naval Academy in the UK. The scholarship normally awarded to outstanding seamen who complete years of service in the military was conveniently awarded this time to the son of the president. It has also come to light that several rules were bent in order to qualify the son in to the Navy as his academic qualification did not meet the necessary requirements. He has served only a few months as a junior officer and has not seen any action although he was recently seen wearing a uniform which included a sword normally reserved for the top brass.
Little seems to have changed. Mahinda, like everyone else who held the commander-in-chief position, has put his and his family's well being before the needs of the country. Is there a point in expecting any thing different from his cabinet or other appointees?

YEa there is not reason to think this president will be different. Everyone starts with lot of promises and plans but eventually all they think about is themselves.
It is still better he joined the Navy and took the scholarship than just party all night at night clubs like others do.
Pj,
I disagree. The cost of sending Yoshita to Darthmouth is staggering.
The Rajapakses are quickly proving themselves to be the potentially most corrupt leader clan South Asia has ever seen....look at what is happening to Hambantota district - airport, oil refinery, targeted electrification....is this "Mahinda Chinthana" or "Helping Hambantota"?
King Rajapakse should put his money where his mouth is, take Yoshita back to Sri Lanka and send him to serve in the East under the same conditions as other young men. Then, and only then, will I believe the BS propaganda about 'gifting a son to the nation'.
Quite interested to see that Yoshita is interested in attending a 'Navy school'.. if I am not mistaken..didnt he get an Aston Martin from daddy-dearest recently?
It is staggering and heart-wrenching to be looking at Sri Lanka from the outside. You can see just how much Sri Lanka is getting neglected from all the money laundering and corruption. It is inhumane to put you and your family ahead of the interests of the people of Sri Lanka.
Yup, I would like to see Yoshi go in the front line like the other lads there right now and see what bravery and comradeship is all about. Well that would be the day...(LOL)
Do you think Yoshita even looks at blogs like this..Does he even get involved with what Sri Lankans are talking about?
Disgraceful. How can people do this? It's one thing to not send your son to the army. I can understand the paternal feelings but it is another to use the money meant for the war that would have saved other soldiers lives in to sending his own son to an academy. Pathetic!
what shocks me is how people could have voted for mahinda in the first place! didnt anyone see this coming? what is the point in debating now, he is using all underhand schemes possible to make sure he will remain president and his son will be the next!
As if we had an obvious better choice???
Rajapakse's are fast becoming the Borgia clan in Sri Lanka. Mahinda is the president, Basil is the advisor, Gotabaya is the defence secretary and now the son. only history will tell the rest.
well it is nauseating... but then again you couldn't expect anything else from this regime...
Being cynical about these things would help.
Of course Mahinda doesn't want to put his son in danger. Why would any father do that if he could help it? Do you actually expect him to sacrifice his son for good PR? That's like expecting Prince Harry to be packed off to the Iraqi front line.
He doesn't have an Aston Martin by the way.
just mal,
No, I don't expect King Mahinda to put his son in danger. He shouldn't have to.
But I do expect him not to BRAG about 'gifting a son to the nation', and then whisk him off to a safe haven.
The Iraq analogy is flawed, btw - the UK have relatively few soldiers in Iraq, so they are a minority. Sri Lankan Navy have an absolute staggering majority of its recruits inside the country.
And I don't remember Prince Charles bragging about sending his son off to the army, 'gifting him to the nation', then giving him an opportunity of a lifetime to live safely in a civilised country. Unlike our current homeland.
If King Mahinda truly meant to gift Yoshita to this nation, the we as a nation should be allowed to have a say.
Prince Harry is to be packed off to Iraq. The decision lies with the general and not the Prime Minister or the Queen!
Hey. I’m all for anyone leaving the bloody country – from Nigambo lagoon or Learjet – doesn’t matter.
May be after all, that boy is tired of Sri Lanka too. Who knows!
Don’t say he is not a true son.
He is!
Every son or daughter of SL has one common thing. Get out of Sri Lanka (or separate from Sri Lanka).
Rich, poor, military, civilian, young, old, Tamil, Sinhalese, educated, uneducated – doesn’t matter. It is out identity.
He is a true son.
Sam's on crack. You shouldn't be leaving the country. You should be checking into a mental asylum.
just_mal..you must be another beaurecrat's son slugging away on tax payers money or maybe a son of a minister or "entreprenuer" .. Mahinda boasted of 'gifting a son to the nation' is so pathetic.
You're comment 'That's like expecting Prince Harry to be packed off to the Iraqi front line' has no relativity - the proportion of English soldiers is significantly less than the number of American soldiers.
Oh and correct me about the 'Aston Martin' statement- I wouldnt be suprised if he had a very expensive car- most President's son's are whisked off to other countries and lead lavish lifestyles.
All I can say is..I hope that his time at Naval College is spent wisely.Hopefully he can pick up a thing or two on basic leadership.
Sam- you sound like you didn't like living in Sri Lanka very much..or are u saying that cos you want to get out of there? It says that you are 250 yrs old-I think you have some issues mate.
Lanka Gal from Aussie - email lankawatch@gmail.com. Thanks.
@anonymous- why..am I being apprehended?
:) no
I’m not on Crack (at least not right now).
I defiantly enjoy SL – only because of her food! (Crack is reasonably good reason too).
But any given moment I can collect more than 100 people willing to risk life and go to any country (from nigambo lagoon off cause) and willing pay at least 400k Rs.
I don’t have to reminded you about all the ladies leave their kids and leave SL, I suppose.
Not only that, at middle of the night to all day.. 100s ppl was standing outside the UK embassy for weeks once they offer vacation visa. MM Organization alone makes 2million Rs profit filling green card applications last year.
So why not president’s boy!
I am not disagreeing there are people willing to go abroad. I am trying to explain why that has no relevance here. People leave for economic reason. Is president's son having trouble making a living?? May be the crack will help you think better. Right now you sound stupid.
Lets look on the bright side. They might make a man of him yet and maybe even teach him some manners.
We will then have a well mannered king when its his turn to rule....
Will he? Once you get the taste of power I don't think the manners learnt at a British Academy is going last very long.
it was Namal who got the Aston Martin.. mahinda has 3 sons innit !
