Tigers flee. Vakarai in Government control.
Sri Lankan military has captured the strategic town of Vakarai in the embattled eastern province of the island. Previous reports indicated the last of the Tamil Tiger rebels took over the Vakarai hospital as they retreated from the surrounding camps. Civilians in the hospital and the near by areas were driven out by the Tigers making way for the hundreds of injured Tiger cadres. Reports from the ground suggest, not only have the LTTE suffered a huge defeat but has also angered the local civilian population who have now crossed over to the government controlled areas and are been given basic amenities. An unidentified local speaking to the media has said that they faced harsh conditions under the LTTE leadership and that despite the fighting, were glad the LTTE has been defeated. “Hopefully we will be able to return to our homes and the area will be under the government control” he added.
The Tigers are said to have retreated into the jungles north of Vakarai and are expected seek the help of the Tiger cadres from the north currently defending Killinochchi. Killinochchi, where the leader of the LTTE Prabhakaran is in hiding, is said to be on state of high alert after the losses in the east has increasing the chance of a military onslaught on the quasi-capital of the delusional LTTE homeland, Eelam. A dream, more distant than ever.
As expected, the TamilNet said the Vakarai hospital was attacked by the government forces for no reason and that there were no LTTE cadres hiding in the hospital hinting Vakarai has indeed fallen into the hands off the government.

I think all of you have celebrating too much. LTTE is not lost.
yes the sl army did lose vakarai 11 years ago. and they admitted to losing 45 soldiers in this whole operation. hopefully the ltte filth can be completed driven out of all areas south of trinco. the ltte seems to doing a lot of claymore work around vavuniya lately too, prob trying to secure another supply route around their to the east.
Sri Lanka needs to put systems in place that will provide safe guards for the surviving moderate tamil leadership, to prevent them also from being annhilated by the tamil terrorists who consider anyone un-aligned with their terror doctrine as an open target. More than the SL government, it is the duty of the tamils who desire peace and equal recognition within Sri Lanka to understand that recognition comes only from a demonstrated ability to hold responsibility. It is the tamils themselves who have to orchestrate their degree of acceptance within the nation's power structure at this point.
anonymous - good point. I completely agree. this government is not doing enough on the political front. Success in the battle front has got into their heads. I hope the historical events are not repeated by ignoring the asipirations of Tamils that started the war in the first place.
Tamilnet is an independent news source. It is not under control of any other organization.
^rofl thanks for the laugh mate.
Tamilnet is not an independent new source.
It is under the gun of the world's most vivous terrorist organization.
you have proof of that? or is this part of the government propaganda?
I wish people would stop commenting as anonymous. It's difficult to keep track of who said what. If you want to hide your identity, use a pseudonym. At least that way we can follow the dialogue.
I agree.
Every official LTTE press release is released on tamilnet first. Tamilnet is the voice of the Tiger terrorist period!
