Happening Party at a NGO Office – Railway Avenue, Colombo 5

It was believed that on Friday the 8th of September, a leading NGO down Railway Avenue, Colombo 5 had a fancy pool party at their office, which went on still early morning on Saturday. Here it was seen, including the leading figures of the organization drunk, half naked dancing away to trance/techno music. Our sources say that, people have noticed many illegal substances been consumed at the premises. Of-course it was also noticed by our correspondent that people have been seen making out at all corners of the NGO’s official premises (Office).

It is indeed sad to hear, that some of these NGO’s use resources provided by donors for such activity. It is indeed important for company get-together. Nevertheless, not for such activity, especially from the NGO sector who is aiming at helping people.

Does the donors know what is happening in Sri Lanka? Your guess is good as mine!

This is what happens with many of the NGO’s today. It has also been seen that many of the NGO’s hardly does nothing but smoke pot and sends false reports to the donors stating that there is more development to do and they need more funding….

Only if all the NGO’s are monitored and made sure that their task are met as projected. If not, kick the bastards out.

Spoken like a true cynic.

Regardless of that, it such acts does happen in Colombo by some of the NGO’s. But my friend, there is more happening parties than a pool party with naked people and pot. Some NGO parties go to the extend of having orgy parties.

"It is indeed sad to hear, that some of these NGO’s use resources provided by donors for such activity. It is indeed important for company get-together."

It is quite likely that they might have pooled in their monthly salaries to have this party. Hence no worry on that - private people's money (possibility?). Anyways, the question then turns to how much should they be paid for the work that they do...Some NGO's actually do good work, and some, do not. We need to weed out those NGOs' who take the people and the donors for a ride, and encourage the others. And foreign nationals will need to be paid more (international salaries...) but could not, some of these posts be filled by locals?

BTW, don't NGO's have to submit financials (audited) to a) government and b) the donors? and should not we, the public have the right to go through their accounts? in this day and age of IT, i do not see why these NGO's can't put their financials on the web - it costs next to nothing for them to do that. Would be interesting to see how much money is spent on actual work, and how much on four wheel drives (sometimes, they do need four wheel vehicles), salaries and entertainment. They need to be paid "good" salaries, and they need to entertain (sometimes, minisitirial angels) but there got to be a limit to all of this....
Bottom line - if NGOs are there to help us, the people, we need to be able to see what they do, and quantify what they do...
IMO: what they do in their private time, smoke weed or not, does not matter if they do a good job...

they are probably just adapting to the colombo lifestyle, nothing wrong with that :) why worry abt where their money goes, we still don't know where all the GOSL tsunami funds went..there are rumours of course.. hehe..

Yes, the financials should be put on the web, where everybody can access it.

Ideally, their admin and overhead cost should not be more than 10 to a max od 20% of the cost. So, a min of 80% should be used for the project.

Nevertheless, this does not happen even with the UN agencies. SOme are paid over US$1000 per day plus expenses of another US$300-$500. No wonder people dont leave the NGO sector. Good money, good parties, good weed and good orgies!

Man, i should start my own ngo! Can make some mulla huh? (Money).

The NGO in question is Handicap International.

So it is Handicap international huh? Nice office, with a pool, and naked people around? Weed, alcohol.... Good scene...

You think the peace sec (SCOPP) does such activity too? Many remours are flying regarding the staff members of the peace sec misusing celluarphones and govn. resources to gain personal glory and fame...

The best job to do in sri lanka is either become a politician/be connected with them or join a NGO.

Not much work, good money and lifestyle!

Also it was noted that there were hardly any Sri Lankan's at the party.

Hence, if it was a official party, no Sri Lankan staff was invited!

Should such thing be accepted? Why were the Sri Lankan staff not invited?

Hope we dont have any racial issues here by the heads of handicap international, against the Sri Lankan's?

hmmm.. well. the truth is We Sri Lankans are not good at Party most of the time.. but we are very good at getting drunk :-)

Or.. may be they thought we Sri Lankans end up fighting each other.. just like the peace march :-)

pretty true, all we know is to fight. but yet again, the people who starts fights are

1) ministers sons
2) spoiled kids - (rich parents)

the working class might not nec. start a fight at a party. unless its a ministers or ex min. son or a wanna be rich kid.

As long as the employees do their work and use their personal money, there is nothing wrong with having parties; orgies or whatever they want to do. What they do in thier personal life is entirely up to them.

But there is a code of conduct, especially with people who come to developing countries to help less fortunate people, they should adhere to. If they are in this for the fun of it, they are probably in the wrong field.

John, well said.

and yes, having fun is always good, but i dont agree in having such parties at office premises. according to what we have heard, this party was not a normal one. on another note, why was the sri lankan staff not invited?
