Mahinda the Charismatic declares victory …

… and I will be damned if this is his last.

President Rajapakse announced the capture of Sampur to a large gathering of members of the ruling party amidst a standing ovation. Although he didn’t quiet say the “mission is accomplished” the excitement and anticipation was bountiful. The applauding and screaming members gathered at the 55th annual conference of the SLFP probably reflected the sentiment of rest of the country. Finally, we seem to have elected a leader who has the charisma and the allure of a popular dictator able to bring an aura of unity and power to the regime.

Rajapakse, as opposed to other greats such as JR, Premadasa and CBK who were able to drum up support in pockets of Sri Lankan electorate, seems to have crossed the party lines as well as economic lines to become a rare phenomenon in the Sri Lankan politics. He is suddenly viewed by everyone as an intelligent and arrogant leader with clear goals in mind. Even the opposition has expressed desire to work with the man. And I for one, who thought the government should adhere to the ceasefire by all means, am suddenly and secretly celebrating the fall of Sampur.

if he is so charismatic and intelligent why does he need a delegation of 53 at such great cost to the taxpayer to accompany him to New York?

It's like asking if he is so charismatic why is he wearing cloths!! Hahaha. I don't know what his agenda is. It is customary for a head of states to take large delegates on important engagements which generally address significant number of issues in various areas. A trip to NY, I have no doubt, is one such trip.
