Special Peace Envoy & Outgoing Ambassador Meet Commander


NORWEGIAN SPECIAL PEACE ENVOY Mr. John Hanssen Bauer and High Commissioner of Pakistan Mr. Bashir Wali Mohmand separately met the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka at his office in the Army Headquarters this morning (10).

Mr. John Hanssen Bauer, who earlier toured Jaffna and Trincomalee, in a bid to learn ground realities after escalation of violence in the east following the Mavil Aru episode, spoke to the Commander and listened to the military side of the story. Commander explained the sequence of events to the visiting delegate and briefed him on the current security situation in the country during the meeting.

Mr. Bashir Wali Mohmand, who is leaving the country shortly after his tenure of office in Sri Lanka shared his views with the Commander this morning (10) and recalled the good memories during his stay in the country. To signify the importance of the cordial meeting, both Commander and the outgoing envoy exchanged tokens of mementos on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Norwegian special peace envoy Mr. John Hanssen Bauer during a recent visit to the Jaffna peninsula saw for himself the stock of arms and ammunition that was detected from LTTE terrorists. The special envoy after receiving a brief on current security developments in the peninsula from Jaffna Commander Major General G.A Chandrasiri later met Senior Superintendent of Police in Jaffna Mr M .M. B. Ambanwela and District Secretary for Jaffna before the delegation left for Killinochchi
