No compromise with LTTE on Mavilaru - Defence Spokesman

DEFENCE AFFAIRS SPOKESMAN MINISTER KEHELIYA RAMBUKWELLA reiterated the Government’ s stand of not acceding to any conditions from the LTTE to settle the Mavilaru issue.

He said Norwegian special envoy Jon Hanssen had no mandate to accept any condition on behalf of the LTTE for opening the anicut (sluice gate) without Government concurrence.
He said as a sovereign Government it cannot condone a bunch of terrorists taking upon itself the task of opening the sluice – gate by force of arms.

Meanwhile, the Government in a media release said any discussion on the Mavilaru issue must ensure that the situation at the sluice – gate returns to its original status, in which the Engineers of the Irrigation Department can have unimpeded access to the sluice – gates freely and safely to manage the water distribution at Mavilaru. This position has been conveyed to the Norwegian facilitator.
