Brilliant Sri Lankans storm into finals - Aussies favourites but the world's behind SL

Sri Lankans defeated the much fancied Kiwis to book a place in the 2007 Cricket World Cup finals to be held in Barbados on Saturday. The captain Mahela Jayawardene was in top form as he scored an unbeaten century helping Sri Lanka post an imposing total of 289. Chasing the target, New Zealand batting crumbled bringing their world cup hopes to an end.

Most cricket fans are seeing the finals as a battle between the arrogant style of Aussie cricket versus the spirit and skill of the dazzling Sri Lankans; although the Australians are the overwhelming favorites, people from world over - New Zealand to India - are hoping for the Sri Lankan victory. Banners hanging from stores across cities in India wishing victory for Sri Lanka and the occasional lion flag flying high in London and Kingston is an indication of vast support Sri Lanka will enjoy on Saturday. In addition, West Indies, having performed poorly, has adopted Sri Lanka as the "home" team. So might we win or lose, the small island that is Sri Lanka can be proud to represent a large section of the cricket loving population from all across the globe on Saturday when they clash with the mighty Australians.

World is behind SL. Even the British embassy in Colombo ignored usual diplomatic neutrality and released a statement supporting the Sri Lankan lions!!
