Saudis to build a model city. To deal with the guilt?
The model village to be build by the Saudis in Ampara is to be named after the all-powerful King of Saudi Arabia. This is the same king who rejected the appeal from the Sri Lankan government as well as the rest of the civilized world to spare the lives of the 4 Sri Lankans who were eventually beheaded for robbery. Initially, the diplomacy by the Sri Lankan government was said to have secured the lives of the Sri Lankans; but without warning, the 4 were executed a few days later with the blessing of the King of Saudi Arabia. In addition to the model village, the Kingdom is funding a number of other developmental projects including the construction of hospitals. Having recognized that the benefactors of such aid is generally the less fortunate - especially of a minority community - I accept the government will be hard pressed not to accept such offers. But should the barbaric execution of the 4 Sri Lankans with the sanction of the Saudi Government go unprotested?

I dont believe that the Saudi King is trying to compensate for any act of theirs that may be considered barbaric by some.
Saudi aid to Sri Lanka has been a longstanding one for many development projects for decades.
The execution of the four Sri Lankans in Saudi Arabia was in keeping with their laws and customs which are comon knowledge to the rest of the world. I think it is wrong to protest the punishment even if it may appear to be barbaric to ones own way of dealing with crime.
Every nation has its own share of criminality, coirruption and crookedness in its own special way. Sri Lanka is no exception. If we thinik and beliee that the democracy we have in our backyard is a haven then we are all sadly mistaken.
The Saudi legal system is based on Islamic Shariah Law and is expected to provide a deterrent for others who may also think of committing such criminal acts.
Many in Sri Lanka clamor for the death penalty which is not at all surprising. The methodology mauy differ from nation to nation but a death penalty is still a death penalty.
The way the Americans hanged Saddam Hussein is a gross example of this.
If people do not want to be subject to Saudi Law then they must choose different destinations in search of greener pastures.

What the???? I don't know any other civilized country that takes a sword and chops someones head off for stealing!! Any other country except a few country that failed keep up with times and still still uses a legal systems that is thousands of years old!!
The first comment is appaling!!!
1. However you look at it (even if you are pro-death penalty) executing for robbery is barberic!!
2. Sharia law is ancient! The failure to reform is the demis of the world muslims!
3. Yes there is corruption blah blah but there is no state sponsonsored murder in Sri Lanka.
4. Killing of Saddam was as barberic - but remember this man gassed, totured, rapes and killed millions of people.
5. Greener pastures? More reasons why the execution is barberic. The men were not killing or raping people. They were simply trying to change their social status. That's why they were in the barberic country in the first place.
3. Yes there is corruption blah blah but there is no state sponsonsored murder in Sri Lanka.
Many, people disagree with you on that point. There has certainly been tens of thousand killed by the state in Sri Lanka in extrajudicial manners.
