AI's ill-conceived delivery

Finally there is something we Sri Lankans can all unite behind. Well yea, there is the Sri Lankan cricket team and also bashing the AI’s campaign designed to draw attention to the human rights violations by collecting signature of those attending the World Cup in the Caribbean. There is an unusual level of consensus among all communities within Sri Lanka that AI – or anyone else for that matter – should stay the hell away from probably the one thing in Sri Lanka that is truly integrated. The national cricket team represents all major communities and regions of the island despite the varied degree of interest in the game and the restricted ability to play the game in the war torn areas of the island. It is even rumored that Prabhakaran was “satisfied” when the Sri Lankans won the World Cup in 1996; and apparently keenly follows the progress of the team in this World Cup. To have even the groups with extremist opinions converge in support for an institution that is inherently diverse and united and then to have AI target that very institution with the goal to advance their unrelated objectives is … well … kinda counter-productive. The ill-conceived AI delivery - this time - seems far wide off the legs side, running down to the boundary.

The human rights abuses in Sri Lanka has reached an unprecedented level. I don't really blame AI for doing what it takes for the world to see what is going on in Sri Lanka.

human rights situation in SL might be grave but this is grade a punnaku from ai. the cricket team has nothing to do with politics. if they r gonna pinpoint on sri lanka to 'play by the rules' why arnt they picking on australia or england, who r responsible for countless hr violations the world over? i have lost all respect for ai. pretty much every ngo seems to be run by hippies or idiots on ltte payroll who r willing to a new low everytime they wanna prove their point.

Rumours galore. BUt the bottomline is that AI credibility has been compromised with this stupid stunt. Exactly like the article points out the AI is targetting what is right about Sri Lanka to highlight what is wrong with Sri Lanka. Involving the much loved members of the Sri Lankan cricket team who has always been generous, unbiased, uniting and peace-loving is a gross violation of their fundermental rights. Ironic that AI is responsible for it.

Just found this and left it as a comment in another blog as well:

"I used to be a member of AI, and was proud to be so. I let my membership lapse when I realised that, far from championing human rights everywhere, AI had been taken over by Western self-haters and turned into a political campaigning organisation with a distinctly anti-Western (and specifically anti-American) agenda. I applaud Nick Cohen's sentiments, but fear that it's already too late to save the AI that was."

Obviously AI got bashed from all directions on their stupid idea to bring politics to sporting event. But have they responded to all the criticism? Guess not.

Yea good article. I think AI needs to come up with an explanation for their actions.
