Norway recruiting child soldiers

It is no secret that the government does in fact cooperate with the breakaway Karuna faction in order to gain a military edge over the Tamil Tigers. But the news of Sri Lankan government, who’s age of conscription to the military is 18, is involved in recruiting children came as a shock to everyone including the citizens of Sri Lanka. But reading into the UN special envoy Allan Rock’s report which implicated the Sri Lankan government of recruiting child soldiers one can observe, it was based on the logic that the government is only guilty because it collaborated to some degree with a group that in turn is responsible for the recruitment children under the age of 18 for the purpose of engaging them in combat.

Using the identical reasoning, it has come to light that the Royal Government of Norway is also guilty by way of collaborating with groups that not only recruit children but are also involved in other crimes against humanity such as genocide, rape and human and drug trafficking. Norway, as the largest developer of small arms, engage in the sale of arms to these groups that include the rebels of Congo, Darfur and other troubled conflict areas of the world. The degree of involvement and the exact groups the Norwegian government collaborates remains a secret for the most part given the little information Norwegian government releases to the public regarding its arms program. Nevertheless, the UN in a report concluded the worst of the world’s conflicts are fueled by the sale of small arms and that Norwegians provide the bulk of small arms that end up in the hands of these rebel organizations. So, based on this reasoning, it has become evident the Norwegians are in fact responsible for crimes against humanity and should be duly investigated.

I would very much like a representative of the govt. of Norway to respond to that. I want someone from the embassy or SLMM to answer the basic question that if the Sri Lankan government is guilty because of a second degree connection to a group that is violating human rights, then why is Norway not equally guilty given their arms program???

Norway was invited by the government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE together to be a facilitator for their peace talks. Now the peace process is not moving forward due to lack of commitment to the process from the two Sri Lankan parties in the conflict. As facilitator, Norway has not really had much power to do much except try to make the stubborn parties talk. But the parties simply don't seem enough interested in creating peace.

And on websites like this one, instead of trying a little bit better to create peace and build confidence in the society, Sri Lankan ideologists of different kinds are coming up with all sorts of rediculous lies about the Norwegian government and its intentions, like the silly spin-up presented here. It is clearly a manoeuvre to take people's minds off the real issue,- the lack of true commitment to the pace process by the Sri Lankan parties themselves!

Could the author please provide solid evidence for the rediculous accusations he is coming up with against Norway? Such accusations must be the creation of paranoid-like war affected minds, who mix up outdated anticolonial ideology, with a lack of analytical strength which makes the author blame the wrong actors for the tragical situation at Sri Lanka today.

Let's just face it: Even if Sri Lanka will remain one country or turn into two, or if powers will be more devolved, Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims will have to live side by side on the same island. What matters most under any form of administrative solution is that people should start to respect and trust each other. Trust in a society is not created by lies and groundless suspicions being spread uncritically around, like on this web site.

It seems like those accusations about the Norwegian government is coming from those who don't really want peace at Sri Lanka. They obviously don't consider how many people at the island will suffer from this destructive climate of paranoid suspicions bothering people's minds in this war-torn society.

That's not the point of the article. The point of the article is that YES Norway has a huge role in the country. But they have been losing focus and giving in too much to the terrorists. THey should learn to stand ground and criticize one side when its wrong. LTTE carried out 3500 more violations than the government under their watch. BUt all Norway could voice is to implicate the government for something Karuna's group (who were created by the LTTE) recruited child soldiers. Norway needs to reprimand wrong doers as well as give kudos to the government for making the effort.
