Why Sangakkara is in all but name the captain

Since the trashing Sri Lanka got in India, the team has come a long way under the captaincy of Mahela Jayawardene. Under his watch the Sri Lankan team went from that humiliating defeat to demolish the English cricket. Going into the Champion’s Trophy, Sri Lankan team seems to be a tight, effective group considered by many to be a top contender. And the man behind it all, I think is … Sangakkara!

Mahela has improved tremendously as a captain. If anyone thought he had a timid and submissive personality that hindered his performance in certain circumstances, he changed all that by smashing the wickets with his bat when he was out caught (for which he later apologized). During the period of his progress to exercise authority as the captain, Sangakkara was, in my opinion, already up there. He has demonstrated a sense of calmness and leadership quality that is more natural and omnipotent. While Mahela tries, Sangakkara was readily accepted by all and never had to face any sort of opposition from the rest of the team that Mahela had to overcome in his path to captaincy.

Sangakkara is also the more reliable player. His dependability as a batsmen has been overshadowed by the recent back-to-form success of Mahela but Sanga has always been the solid concrete pillar of the current team. His keeping has also improved tremendously to an extent he could very well be the best wicketkeeper batsmen in the world. He is also the diplomatic and social of the two and while Mahela is either loved or hated by the teammates and fans alike, Sanga is simply loved by everyone.

That's pretty obvious. Why was Mahela made the captain?? I guess they shouldn't change now but it's very true that sanga should be captain.

Lankawatch is from no one school. Javaman might be. But I don't think he wants the captaincy changed. Just making a point about what Sanga is to the team outside of the spotlight.

Sanga is cool. Very cool.
Er... have you seen that clip of him heckling Pollock at the crease ? It's doing the rounds on the net. Really cool. But diplomatic ? Well....

Anyone happen to have the link to that Sangakkara vs Pollock clip handy? I tried Youtube, but didnt find it.

Chiming in - I think Sanga's sledging is fantastic. Anyone can say a bunch of foul stuff behind the wickets to piss off the batsman, but from the ones by Sanga that I know of, his is riddled with wit and is definitely not crass.

Sanga is definitely the person who keeps the team together and definitely the strategist behind the Sri Lankan cricket once they are in the field. The very fact he is not interested in coming to a duel with the board or team members about wanting to be the captain solidifies his roll as the leader of the bunch.

mahela might look like the nice guy but i reckon hes got a lot of power behind the scenes. dont think he was ever dropped no matter how crap he played and apperently he was 'groomed' for captain. why?

sanga's a team player so i dont think he really gives a shit bout all the politics. and apparently they r very good friends. these days u cant win a match based on individual performances.

Thats the most attractive quality of Sanga. He has no ill-will with anyone nor does he want to be the captain. He is happy to play under anyone or I suspect, lead the team if he is told to. Either way he will give 100%

Sanga and Mahela are peas in a pod. Mahela is by far the more talented cricketer and shrewd captain. Sangakkara is a statesman. They complement each other very well.

Sanga doesn't seem to have any problem with the status quo so I don't know why many others should.

As the post points out the team has come a long way - why fix something that's not broken?

For a better insight read my interview with Mahela in this month's Adoh magazine.
