Why expats support Tamil Tigers

Before this posting gets bombarded with hate mails, let me say that, yes, most expats in Sri Lanka may not unequivocally support the Tamil Tigers but are - for practical reasons - neutral. And another few – like those who volunteered to join charities like TRO in the height of the Tsunami saga and with the bestest of intentions – were ignorant victims of the indirect LTTE propaganda and came to Sri Lanka only to realize that they are now affiliated to a terror organization. And a few from that group defend the LTTE in defiance understandably not wanting to accept that they have made a potentially fatal career mistake.

But in general a lot of expats tend to come off as being sympathetic to Tamil Tigers. Considering those who would venture out into a country with political instability are most often left leaning liberals, it is not surprising they would support a group that is anti organized government and are effectively underdogs fighting with their lives to make a political statement; similar to why some of us support the Palestinians against the mighty power of the Israel. While it is a sometimes appropriate to give moral support to ‘revolutionists’ who challenge the system, one must remain within a reasonable range of objectivity. Anyone familiar with the history of Tamil Tigers will recall how they deliberately attacked civilian institutions killing scores of innocent men, women and children; and how everyone in villagers were hacked to death including the priests and how places of warships along with the entire villages were razed to the ground. To be fair, the successive Sri Lankan governments are also guilty of not doing enough to curb violence against minority Tamils, but none of the worst crimes against Tamils ever came as orders from the government. Any incident that causes disruption to ‘government’ is by definition, a set back for the elected officials. But on the other hand, violence is what funds and help sustain the Tamil Tigers. If the CFA violations count put out by the SLMM is anything to go by, consider them before you exercise your rebellious, liberal clout and support those who you think are merely a trendy group od revolutionists who are fighting off some kind of an evil aggression, think about all the civilians who have been murdered by them for merely having a different point of view and think of the generation of children who have been denied the basic rights and a chance to be liberal minds like yourselves. So take liberty to question the system; but for goodness sake don’t lose sight of reality and pick the wrong fight.

Who are you talking to here? Do you have any evidence of expats supporting the LTTE or joining the TRO?

It seems that you're just talking to your own insecurity

A whole lot of expats are sympathizers of the minority cause but don't neccessarily support the LTTE. Their sympathy may come out as being supporting the LTTE.

Most expats may not support the LTTE but they are coerced in to giving money and in order to protect themselves and their families they pay money to the LTTE. In addition to that many of the asylum seekers though not supporting the LTTE feel obliged to pay money because if not for the LTTE they would never have got the chance to come to the West and claim asylum and all the benefits they would not have even dreamt of in the Wanni.

Excellent article. It does explain why most expats in Sri Lanka are viwed as supporters. But if you look closer most expats only sympathise with people who are marginalised. The expats in Sri Lanka who are here are obviously attached to working with such people are will tend to be sympathetic. There is no reason for them to sympathise with the government. Your article I think highlights this.

If I want to be as an expact in this case ~ I will support LTTE or something related to that. If I put that in other word, I will not support government.

The reason is, government is already established organization and there is no much of space for me to fit in to that ideology when I’m coming form outside. That is the nature of Government. If I want to have my voice in the government side, I have to come in throw the democratic process.

But if I represent LTTE ideology or something related to that – I don’t need any of those - I get enough space to fit in automatically in to that - then get bargaining power front of government and international community. I can turn in to representative of ‘something’ over night. That is the best shortcut to build up a carrier and sell some books at end of the day.

All I have to do is make sure to add some humanitarian picture to my agenda and condemn violence in general – because soon or later everyone may have to find a new position.

I think expact support LTTE (some do), because there is enough empty seats for them to come and sit down. Some times they get offered tea with cake too. Why not?

Good point!! It's not news if government opened a ... say a child welfare center. But it is big news if the LTTE opened one. So people like Luthra only focus on reports that makes her a celebrity. Shame on those who glorify terrorism for the sake of popularity and money.

I am I suppose what you call an expat in Sri Lanka. I joined an international NGO soon after the Tsunami and was stationed in the North-East. I or anyone I work with are not LTTE sympathisers. But we do have to work with all groups in order to facilitate relief logistics. Some of the recipients of our aid may be Tamil Tigers but we are here strictly on a humanitarian role and do not alienate any person in need. However, I am aware of some NGO's that carry out politically motivated projects. I think it is these few that have brought the notion upon the locals that expats sympathise with the Tamil Tigers.
