Why the LTTE is winning
The LTTE’s long term goal may be the formation of a separate state but the realistic, short term goal of the LTTE is to create enough destabilization to sustain a criminal organization and to ensure the survival of the leadership who is wanted by more than one country for various crimes. By sustaining an environment of insecurity and instability for over two decades, the LTTE has managed to create division and hate within Sri Lanka, which used to be known for the diversity and tolerance. These changes in the core values of the Sri Lankan community might very well be here to stay and could only help the disintegration of the country in the future.
On the other hand, the clear objectives of the Sri Lankan government is to ensure security and stability within the country and to exercise the power vested in them by the electorate. The government has found it increasingly difficult to do this universally across the island and has in fact, conceded large areas of land to the LTTE.
So although the military success factors may be borders and casualties, everytime there is a extra-judicial killing or a claymore explosion - regardless who the victims are - it is a victory for the LTTE.

LTTE will not win. They want to rule half the country. This will not happen ever.
This is true. Government has set winning as eliminating the LTTE. This will not happen. BUt LTTE will always win because there will never be stability and security in Sri Lanka.
sri lanka was known for tolerance????
when exactly was that?
hmm lets see ... Sri Lanka minorities could vote before African American could vote, despite being 70% there was total religious freedom, was a popular destination for people from Arab-Asia, Malay, Europe, India and various other parts of the world because of the cultural tolerance .... hmm need I go on? OH yes I must add and everyone else got alone pretty well until a poopers wanted more!!
True. Its a known fact that Sri Lankan are tolerant and a diverse community. When the Tigers started their needless and violent struggle, Sri Lanka enjoyed a relatively peaceful and free society. Sri Lanka has more diverse set of religious structures per square mile than any other country in the world. It is the only country where buddhist priests and catholic priests co-exists in the same village as village leaders. Sri Lankans are perhaps the most tolerant and inviting people who accepted the Muslims as integral part of their society thereby discouraging extremism. Sri Lankans are more inter-married than any other country as whole. Every buddhist has a catholic or muslim relative. And with a solid education and democracy in place things would have only gotten bettere. Except that one tiny part of the peaceful co-existence got greedy. Wanted power and rejected everyone else on the grounds of culture, caste and religion. And there by destroyed themselves and the country.
The LTTE has not won, even by attrition. Today what you see is a less complicated issue, than the one Sri lanka faced, say fifteen years ago, when the whole world's perception was ranked against the government. Many seem to dismiss this outcome as a fall-out from the attack on the US in Sept 2001, even though in actuality it is the result of extensive examination of the dynamics of this war by independent authorities.
Though the global perceptions do not directly play a role in an outright military defeat of the LTTE, it's agendas have already perished, and what remains is only the residual effects of what it has become as a global criminal enterprise.
Keep dreaming!! LTTE's power is no joke. Anyone who is not able to see that is a fool. They are pretty much here to stay.
15 years ago there was a gang of youth you ran around demanding recognition. Now there is a army who rules a significant part of the island. The situation is better?? On crack?
The Sinhalese found the courage to grant equal voting rights to all citizens at the same time without any discriminaiton, voted the world's first women prime minister and president. These are real acts which places this small country far ahead of even the United States. Meanwhile it is in the Sri Lankan minorities that equal rights of women are non-existant.
That in itself makes most of the claims of the tamil minority hard to believe.
I have lived for quite a long time in Sri Lanka and have witnessed the equality and opportunity for anyone who is willing to work to achieve their dream. The tamils need to allow greater freedom for their women, and stop the violence if they desire peace.
The LTTE has a history of using children as soldiers, which basically cancels out any of their good intentions in my book. If they are so set on achieving a new territory and want that territory to have any sort of peace or stability in the future, then why don't they care about the people now?
