Micro Launches a SUV
The only car manufacturing company in Sri Lanka presented its newest make - a Sports Utility Vehicle, Renton - to the president Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday at Temple Trees yesterday. Unfortunately, its website www.microcars.lk hasn't been able to keep up with the new designs and so the car is not featured there. But there is a picture of the president driving a Renton on ColomboPage. The SUV is made under license to the Korean car maker SsangYong and is expected to cost about US$40,000.
According to press releases, the company has won tenders to provide cars to the local office of the the United Nation Development Programme as well as the Sri Lankan Air Force and other government and non-profit organizations. Micro executives claim the manufacturing plant is able to produce upto 600 cars a month. Its current output is 40.
Incidently, the car company sold 40% of its stake to a US investment company called MicroHoldings US.

I think the car and the parts are designed in Korea but is manufactured and assembled here.
Proton started by assembling Mitsubishi cars in Malaysia. Look where it is now... Well, nowhere. But still that's the only business model available.
