Irony of it all – Illiberal Democracy?

Reading the earlier post about a TamilNet’s article, I couldn’t help thinking about the irony of the situation. The article, obviously speaking for the LTTE, laments the democracy of the country and singles out the lack of autonomy of the judicial system as a chief cause of the issues in Sri Lanka. At the same time, in the past couple of years, it protested two of the most significant decisions made independently by the supreme court; the invalidation of the PTOMs agreement between the government and the LTTE aimed at providing relief to the Tsunami victims and the declaration of the North-East merger as unconstitutional.

Moreover, you can’t help but wonder if it is their discontent in the intricacies of the government and judiciary in Sri Lanka that have prompted them to adopt a different approach: the extra-judicial killings in an attempt to eliminate all those who oppose their ideology, use of deliberate violence and intimidation against civilians to 'sanitize' Thamileelam of non-Tamil speaking population and the torture of those citizens who exercised their right to vote. (The story is that the sole voter from Killinochchi in the last general elections apparently had his limbs cut off under the order of the LTTE leadership)

What TamilNet needs to explain is that, if their resources are utilized to detail out and analyze the ‘mistakes’ of the legitimate and democratic government they claim is ‘illiberal’, how come no report is ever published on the absence of any form of justice within the LTTE de-facto ‘government’. I would very much like to see a report on the democracy and the policies of the statehood under the leadership of the Prabhakaran.
