LTTE accepts, it can't solve Tamil grievances

In its latest press release the LTTE is urging that "immediate action must be taken to address the needs of civilians trapped in the LTTE administered areas of Trincomalee district."
LTTE press release states "The plight of the Tamil community under GoSL oppression," dated 10 August 2006, issued by the LTTE's Peace Secretariat "Close to 42,000 civilians are trapped and displaced, with no proper food, water, or medical assistance in LTTE areas of Eachchilampattu, Sampoor, Verugal, Kathiraveli, Vaharai and surrounding villages."
Analysts see this as a serious admission of the failure of the LTTE to look after the welfare of the Tamils in its so-called de facto state.

A leading analyst pointed out that there is a contradiction in the LTTE blaming the Sri Lankan government for not feeding its people after boasting that it is running the state of Eelam efficiently with courts, police, banks etc. He argued: "If the LTTE can purchase and smuggle highly sophisticated lethal weapons to attack civilians and security forces why can't it buy milk powder for the babies?"

Privately, Tamil expatriates who had contributed substantial monies to the LTTE are asking: What happened to the millions donated by our people? Who is pocketing them?
Ranjith Soysa, spokesperson for the Australian-based Society of Peace, Unity and Human Rights (SPUR) said that Tamil expatriates campaigning for the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation have collected money claiming that it was for the welfare of the Tamil people.

"Millions were collected. What happened to that money? If Government of Sri Lankan is providing free education from the kindergarten to the University, if the government of Sri Lankan is providing free medical services, if the government of Sri Lanka is paying the salaries of teachers, doctors, nurses and government servants providing social services for the Tamils, what is Prabhakaran doing with the millions he receives from Tamil expatriates and illegal taxes?," he asked.

He added: "It is strange that the LTTE which has tons of money to spend on Prabhakaran's daughter birthday in London doesn't have money to feed the Tamil babies with some milk."
LTTE is also complaining that LTTE press release states that supplies are blocked at checkpoints and there is an embargo on the food supplies coming into the area.

Dr. Palitha Kohona, head of the Peace Secretariat, said that "there is no embargo". He said that there are "only delays in checking all products going to and coming from the un-cleared areas."
He added: "This is normal given the current situation. Cement and steel rods are high up on the list of items being checked. We have worked out a procedure for monitoring the uses to which these will be put."
