Monks on Rampage - Damages Kovil
Two Buddhist monks were remanded by a Colombo magistrate after the two went on rampage and destroyed statues of gods in a hindu temple in Grandpass. The fact that the act of violence against another religion was carried out by the very people who preach kindness, humanity and compassion is despicable and given the situation of the country, counter-productive to the goal of achieving peace and prosperity in the island. As such, the act is not only violent but also unpatriotic and divisive and only helps the elements in the country who thrive on violence and terrorism. The damage by the monks on a Kovil was quickly adopted by LTTE propagandists to highlight the racial violence directed at Tamils in Sri Lanka. Tamilnet - a pro-LTTE website with a world-wide readership was quick to publish an article along with pictures that describe the extent of the damage to the Kovil.
The incident occurred in the premises of Muttumari Amman Kovil in Grandpass. The duo was promptly arrested and remanded till the 9th of September after a devotee complained to the police.
