President meets UN chief - Havana
President Mahinda Rajapakse met with UN Secretary General Kofi Anan at the 14th NAM summit in Havana, Cuba early today (Saturday the 16th of September). The president briefed the present situation in the country and the government stance on the peace process to the UN chief.
The president told the Mr. Kofi Anan that the government has already appointed an independent commission to investigate into the recent killings, disappearances, and abductions in Sri Lanka. He also pointed out that an international commission is appointed in near future to observe these investigations to ensure impartiality and transparency.
During the meeting the president explained the rationality behind the recent military offensives conducted by the Security Forces against the LTTE. He told UN chief that the Security Forces have been compelled to defend themselves in the face of wide speared provocations of the LTTE.
