Four Mahanayakes vow to summon people’s power against Chandrika if she goes ahead with Joint Mechanism

Overnight a formidable lobby of the sangha (Buddhist monks) has emerged to oppose the Joint Mechanism proposed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga. The Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakitha Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter, the Ven. Weweldeniya Medhalankara Mahanayake Thera of the Ramanna Nikaya and the Ven. Dauldena Gnanissara Mahanayake Thera of the Amarapura Nikaya – the four leading pillars of Buddhism – have warned the President to respond to the fast-unto-death undertaken by Dr. Ven. Omalpe Sobitha who is weakening by the hour on dais of the Sacred Temple of Tooth in Kandy.
