Former minister sued for defamation

The lawyer for deported Sri Lankan asylum seeker, Thakshila Premarathna, has filed a $3 million defamation claim against former Immigration Minister Lianne Dalziel.

Papers filed by the defence say the teenager and her grandmother came to New Zealand on false passports and originally claimed refugee status based on their connection to a suspect in the Columbo airport bombing.
