Sri Lankan truce monitors probing killing of soldier

COLOMBO (AFP) - Norwegian truce monitors were probing the killing of a soldier allegedly by Tamil Tiger rebels in the northern peninsula of Jaffna, a military official said.

"The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) is conducting an investigation into the incident ... where one soldier was killed and another wounded," military spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake said on Thursday.

The shootings occurred Wednesday when Sri Lanka was marking the third anniversary of a ceasefire that halted a 30-year conflict which has claimed more than 60,000 lives.
