Japanese envoy visits Sri Lanka's restive east in fresh attempt at restarting peace talks
A Japanese peace on envoy met on Saturday with Tamil Tiger leaders in rebel-held eastern Sri Lanka, where the recent deadly ambush of a top guerrilla commander has threatened to derail relief efforts and a three-year-long cease-fire.
Hours after the meeting, unidentified assailants lobbed a grenade at a Tamil Tiger office, killing one person and wounding two others, said a military spokesman, Brig. Daya Ratnayake. The incident took place in the government-held northern town of Mannar. Security has been stepped up in the area.
