No unusual wave activity reported until 3am

March 29 (LankaWatch.com) - No unusual wave activity was reported in Sri Lanka at 3.30am, 5 hours after the massive earthquake struck 200km off the coast of Sumatra. Although reports emerging from Indonesia, claims over 50 people were killed and an estimated 300 homes were destroyed by the tremors resulting from the earthquake, no tsunami was reported in the regions closer to the epicenter of the earthquake. Regardless, Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga has mobilized the military and ordered the evacuation of towns in the eastern coastal belt of the country which were severely affected in the tsunami of December 2004. At least 2 deaths have been reported during the evacuation.
