Sri Lanka President appeals to media to act with responsibility

Colombo, 15 August, (Asiantribune.com): President Mahinda Rajapaksa urged the media to act with responsibility while dealing with issues of national importance. Addressing a gathering private and public sector media heads at the Temple Trees this morning, he reminded them that it is a responsibility and duty of the media not to create hatred among the communities.

He said that he did not believe in censorship or media guidelines and clarified that he did not want to impose any conditions or censorship. Media has a responsibility towards society and should refrain from publishing any news, which could give information to target the security forces or foreign envoys. If media, by publishing such information helps the enemies of the nation, it is an unpardonable act.
